Galileo Galilei’s thoughts on tobacco| Tabaccologia

Abstract

This article explores the figure of Galileo Galilei not only as a leading figure in the modern scientific revolution, but also as a keen and critical observer of the cultural and social phenomena that characterised his time. Starting from the historical context of the introduction of tobacco into Europe between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the text analyses the spread of this new product, initially considered medicinal and later becoming a widespread social habit. Although he was neither a physician nor a botanist, Galileo ideally entered in the debate on tobacco use through his rational approach and his method based on observation and experimentation. His works, letters and indirect testimonies reveal a cautious and sceptical attitude towards practices based on superstitions, fads or beliefs that have not been scientifically verified. Tobacco is thus interpreted as an emblematic case of the tension between science, popular tradition and religious authority, as also demonstrated by the ecclesiastical prohibitions of the time. In conclusion, the article highlights how Galileo, although not expressing himself directly on tobacco, would probably have adopted a critical and cautious position, consistent with his view of scientific knowledge and health based on empirical evidence.
