The Awards for journalism committed to the topic of smoking and health were also assigned in 2024. The awards were presented on October 17, during the First day of the XX National Congress of Italian Society of Tobaccology (SITAB) in Rimini.

The national journalism award “Tobacco e Salute” is promoted by Fondazione Umberto Veronesi together with SITAB to promote quality journalism on a topic with a strong health, scientific and social impact such as smoking.

This fourth edition was attended by journalists or members of journalism schools, authors of articles, investigations, reports published in daily newspapers, weeklies, periodicals, online newspapers, press agencies, podcasts, radio and TV.

The jury, composed of experts from the world of medicine, research and journalism, selected works on particularly topical issues. The winners were:

1. Stefania Villa (Print and web category) for the report The online jungle of nicotine pouches, published on Altroconsumo on 28 June 2024. It is an in-depth investigation that explores the wild market of nicotine pouches, rapidly spreading products promoted by aggressive marketing aimed especially at young people and the very young;
2. Lidia Scognamiglio (Audio and video category) for the report Lung cancer, a life-saving screening for smokers, broadcast on Tg2 Medicina 33 on 6 June 2024. The report tells the touching story of Elisabetta, a woman, a former heavy smoker, who discovered lung cancer in an early stage thanks to a screening program.

A special mention to Michela Iaccarino for the report Cigarettes, the damage to health and the mockery for the planet published on 9 July 2024 on Il Fatto Quotidiano. A passionate in-depth look at the most hidden cost of tobacco, the one borne by the environment.

The call for the 2025 edition of the Award will be available starting in May on the websites tabaccologia.it and fondazioneveronesi.it.
